BIOGRAPHY

Inspiration is key for all kinds of communication, and in the era of image-sharing, my work as a photographer makes more sense than ever.

Magnus Lundgren’s life-long visual journey under the surface, in the world's oceans from the cold north to the tropics, east to west, has turned him into a world-renowned and prized underwater photographer. He has been working full-time as a nature conservation and commercial photographer, writer, and lecturer for over 25 years.

As a photographer, his stories and images are used in books, exhibitions, magazines and newspapers, by brands, science, and online. Since 2022, they have also been used in award-winning nature films. His images feature in many of the world’s top-tier publications, such as National Geographic, BBC, Der Spiegel, Geo, The Guardian, Science Illustrated and many more.

It was Jacques-Yves Cousteau's books and films that opened my 7-year-old eyes to the fascinating underwater world, and since then, I have been fascinated and dedicated. I always lean towards three statements: Do good, work hard and have fun!

Over decades, Magnus’ images have been awarded prizes in more than 50 international photo competitions, such as Wildlife Photographer of the Year, European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Ocean Photographer of the Year, Big Picture, DPG Masters (ranked 4th in DPG’s overall competition history) and many more.

Magnus’ images and texts aim to create an understanding of and interest in nature around us. His involvement in conservation has led him to co-found the Wild Wonders concept. A concept that started with the flagship nature communication project “Wild Wonders of Europe”, which reached more than 800 million people. The on-going sister project “Wild Wonders of China” is now entering its final phase, after more than 30 expeditions into China’s wildest places.

Magnus is proud to be one of seven selected Sony Wildlife Explorer photographers, and for four years he has been shooting with Sony’s amazing cameras and optics. He is a trusted expedition leader and has been hosting adventures around the world for the past 30 years. He collaborates with both Scuba Travel and Exposure Underwater as he leads groups to experience marine wilderness around the globe.

Magnus has written more than 100 illustrated articles and has been involved in many book projects. His books “A wilder life” (2018) and “Papua” (2022) were both awarded the “Pandabook of the Year” prize, a Swedish literary award from WWF. Magnus received the awards directly from the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf. The prize committee considered these books to be the best depiction of nature in words and images.

When it comes to diving equipment, Magnus has a long history with Mares, starting in the days when he ran and owned dive centers in Sweden, and as a diver for more than 30 years.

I have always appreciated Mares equipment’s combination of innovation, design and trust-worthy, functional quality.
