Gianni has been participating in all aspects of underwater sports since the age of 18. In 1963, he founded CI CA SUB Mares in Bogliasco, and since then has always been its President, a true record!

In 1969, in a world first, he organised a dive under the ice of Lac du Miage (Mont Blanc) at 2020m with Mares as part of a medical research project.

Since 1972, he has been a professional journalist and publicist. Until now, he has published over 6,000 articles about scuba diving and created over 100 front covers.

For 15 years, he was responsible for the PR for SUB, Pescasub and Fotosub magazines, and for some years the AQVA, Subaqva and DEEP magazines.

In 1972, he created and launched the ecological clean-up operation ‘Fondali Puliti’.

For years, Gianni has created underwater reportages all over the world and in particular has followed many diving world records, freediving records and championships in photography and spearfishing.

He has photographed many champions: Jacques Mayol, Angela Bandini, Umberto Pelizzari, Gianluca Genoni, Tania Streeter, Audrey Mestre and Francisco Ferreras ‘Pipin’ (whom he discovered and launched in to the world of records), Josè Amengual, Antonio Toschi, Massimo Scarpati and many others.

He has immortalised many VIPs underwater, and he particularly likes to remember Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy. Panorama, Dizionario Enciclopedico Treccani, Playboy, Topolino, Reflex, Fotografare, Sport Week, Mondo Sommerso, Maxim, Monsieur and many other Italian and international magazines have published his photographs.

Gianni has won numerous photography competitions and received two gold stars from FIPSAS – CONI. Many of his photos have also been used in past Mares catalogues.

He is currently presenter of the TV show ‘Nel Blu’ on Telegenova.net which has reached 50 episodes.

He prefers action photos and particularly the presence of figures in his underwater photos.

He has organised the Miss Modella Fotosub competition for years as well as many other international underwater photography competitions.
