He set his first record on 17 August 1996 in Siracusa, which had always been home to the historic freediving records of Enzo Maiorca; Gianluca set the new record in variable-ballast free diving with a descent to -106 mt.
He then surpassed this record himself a good eight times in eight years, becoming the undisputed king of the discipline.
